Book Review: 9 Thoughts That Can Change Your Marriage

Book Title: 9 Thoughts That Can Change Your Marriage
Author: Sheila Wray Gregoire
Genre: Nonfiction, Marriage, Christianity
My Rating: ⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆

9 Thoughts That Can Change Your Marriage is a non-fiction motivation to change your marriage by changing the way you think. Sheila Wray Gregoire encourages wives to transform their thinking in regards to how marriage should work in order to deepen their relationship with their husbands.

Sheila covers 9 thoughts in this book: 1) My husband is my neighbor, 2) My husband can't make me mad, 3) My husband was not put on this earth to make me happy, 4) I can't mold my husband into my image, 5) I'm not in competition with my husband, 6) I'm called to be a peacemaker, not a peacekeeper, 7) Being one is more important than being right, 8) Having sex is not the same as making love, and 9) If I'm not careful, we'll drift apart.

For each one of these thoughts, the author explains common misconceptions about marriage that are prevalent in our culture, as well as truth from God's Word to combat those misconceptions. She also includes personal application questions designed to get you thinking about your own heart and action steps you can take to put the thought into practice.

I really appreciated the author's approach to this book-- whereas many marriage books encourage you to do things in an attempt to change your spouse, this book encourages you to change the way you think. It is an important reminder that the important thing is not to find the right person in marriage but to be the right person.

The thoughts that most impacted me were "my husband can't make me mad" and "I'm called to be a peacemaker, not a peacekeeper."

I would recommend this book to wives who would like to improve their marriage (and wouldn't we all?!). If you feel like your marriage is lacking in some area or that you are struggling with being the wife God has called you to be, I encourage you to read this book.
