Book Review: Known by Dick and Ruth Foth

Book Title: Known: Finding Deep Friendships in a Shallow World
Author: Dick and Ruth Foth
Genre: Nonfiction, Friendship, Christianity
My Rating: ⋆⋆⋆⋆

Known: Finding Deep Friendships in a Shallow World is an important reminder of how to build lasting friendships in our social-media crazed, shallow culture. In a world like ours where everyone is busy on social media, interacting in a meaningful way in "real life" is becoming something that fewer and fewer people know how to do. The author explores the importance of true friendship, as well as ways to build these deep and lasting relationships.

He explains that the way we get to know someone is by sharing our life story. By sharing and listening to others, we can identify with each other and build a path to friendship.

But how do we build those deeper friendships? What are some specific ways in which we can accomplish sharing our lives and stories? The author lists ways such as praying for one another, affirming each other with words, not being afraid to confront in love when necessary, and daring to dream with each other.

I really enjoyed Mr. Foth's insightful perspectives as he illustrated the principles of friendship with biblical truth. He reminds us of how Christ and others used these principles in real life.

An aspect of the book I did not enjoy was that the introduction took the first half the book and I felt it was longer than necessary. I think he could have explained the importance of sharing our story with others in a much more concise manner.

I was also a bit frustrated at his unnecessary brevity in the second half of the book, where he was giving the specific ways in which we can build friendships. Unfortunately, although his principles were insightful, he failed to give any real practical application of how to put those principles into action.

I would recommend this book to people who struggle with maintaining deep friendships, or those who are interested in learning some principles to help deepen your existing relationships. Although it is not the best book I have read on the topic of friendship, I did appreciate Mr. Foth's insights and he gave good principles to follow to build deeper friendships.
